A roof order is more than shingles. This page builds a full roofing material list for a 40 by 50 ft gable roof at 6/12 pitch: 2,236 sq ft or 22.4 squares, 75 bundles of shingles with 10% waste, 3 rolls of synthetic underlayment, 20 pieces of drip edge, 3 bundles of ridge cap and 6,600 to 8,000 nails, with the calculator for each line.
A roof order is more than shingles. This list is worked for one example house, a 40 ft by 50 ft footprint with a simple gable roof at 6/12 pitch and the ridge along the 50 ft length, so every quantity can be checked by hand.
| Item | How it is counted | Order |
|---|---|---|
| Shingles | 22.4 squares + 10% waste = 24.6, round to 25 squares at 3 bundles each | 75 bundles |
| Underlayment | 2,236 sq ft plus overlap against a 1,000 sq ft synthetic roll | 3 rolls |
| Drip edge | (100 + 89.4) ft / 10 ft pieces = 18.9, round up and add spares | 20 pieces |
| Starter strip | Eaves and rakes, 189 ft; check the linear feet on the bundle label | Read the label |
| Hip and ridge cap | 50 ft ridge / 20 to 25 ft per bundle | 3 bundles |
| Roofing nails | 264 to 320 nails per square x 25 squares | 6,600 to 8,000 nails |
| Pipe boots, vents, roof cement | Count penetrations from the ground and the attic | One per penetration plus spares |
Ten percent waste on a plain gable is a normal allowance; a hip roof or one with valleys and dormers usually wants 15 percent because every hip and valley is a diagonal cut that leaves offcuts. Running short by one bundle means a second delivery, and a different dye lot can show as a colour patch in raking light.
Coverage figures printed on the bundle, roll or box always beat a general rule, so replace the order column with your brand's numbers.
