Frequently asked questions

What materials do I need to build a deck?

Decking boards, field joists, rim joists, a built-up beam, posts, post bases, concrete for footings, joist hangers, structural screws or bolts, ledger flashing and bolts (for attached decks), deck screws or hidden clips, and joist tape. The calculator above lists quantities for all of them.

What is the material list for a 12x16 deck?

Roughly 29 boards of 16 ft decking, 13 joists of 2×10 at 12 ft, about 60 linear feet of rim joist, a 2-ply 16 ft beam, three 4×4 or 6×6 posts, three footings with 12-18 bags of concrete, 500 deck screws, and 26 joist hangers — about $2,400-$3,600 in 2026 material pricing for pressure-treated.

How much lumber do I need for a deck?

For framing, budget one joist for every 16 inches of deck length, plus rim joists on all open sides, plus a two-ply beam along each support line. The tool above computes exact piece counts and linear footage.

Should I buy 10% or 15% extra decking?

10% is right for a rectangular deck with straight cuts. Go to 15% when you're picture-framing, mitering corners, or running boards diagonally.

Does this include railings and stairs?

No. Use the deck railing calculator for railing material and the deck stair calculator for stringers and treads, then add both to the material cost above.
