What to check on your roof

  1. Stay off the roof. Start from the ground and from windows; a pitched roof wet from a storm is where most DIY falls happen.
  2. Look at the soft metals first: gutters, downspouts, window wraps, vent caps, the AC condenser fins. Fresh round dents are the easiest hail evidence to photograph.
  3. Check the gutters and downspout outlets for a heavy wash of shingle granules (they look like coarse black or coloured sand).
  4. With binoculars, look for dark spots where granules are missing, cracked or torn shingle edges, and lifted or missing tabs.
  5. Check skylights, plastic vent covers and the siding on the storm-facing side; cracked plastic and chipped paint point to large stones.
  6. Inside, look at the attic deck and top-floor ceilings for new stains over the next few rains — bruised shingles can start leaking weeks later.
  7. Write down the date, the time the hail fell at your address in your town, and the largest stone you saw next to a coin or ruler.

Frequently asked questions

When was the last big hail storm in North Dakota?

The most recent report of 1-inch-plus hail in North Dakota in NOAA's storm reports is from September 23, 2026. The table on this page lists every day in the last 12 months.

Where does this hail data come from?

From the local storm reports the National Weather Service sends to NOAA's Storm Prediction Center: trained spotters, the public, emergency managers and media. They are preliminary, and one report describes one spot.

What size hail damages a roof?

From about 1 inch (quarter size) damage becomes likely, especially on older shingles; golf-ball hail (1.75 in) and larger often damages standard asphalt shingles.
