#57 is washed and contains no fines, so it drains freely — but it will never compact into a hard surface. Use crusher run if you need a base that locks up.
Crushed stone is sold by numbered grade, and the numbers are not intuitive. This calculator covers the common grades, tells you what each one is actually for, and returns quantity and cost for your area.
Drainage. It is washed 3/4-inch angular stone with no fines, which is exactly what French drains, pipe bedding, and free-draining driveway surfaces need.
Crusher run contains stone dust and fines, so it compacts into a hard locking base. #57 is washed clean of fines, so it drains freely but stays loose. Base versus drainage.
A layered build: #4 at the bottom, crusher run in the middle, and #57 or #411 on top. A single-grade driveway either fails to drain or fails to compact.
