Densities are for compacted, in-place material. Loose gravel straight off the truck occupies roughly 10–15% more volume.
Suppliers quote gravel by the ton, but calculators and plans work in cubic yards. This converter goes both ways using the actual in-place density of each stone type, so you can order confidently and check a quote against your own numbers.
Most crushed stone falls between 1.35 and 1.5 tons per cubic yard. Crusher run is the heaviest common material at about 1.5 tons; rounded pea gravel and river rock are lighter at about 1.35.
Between about 2,700 and 3,000 pounds, depending on stone type and moisture. Wet gravel can weigh 5–10% more.
